State Tax Modeling: Compare State Taxes Side by Side
State Tax Modeling allows users to assign a different state tax calculation to each scenario within a Scenario Analysis. This makes it easy to compare how different state tax laws affect the same federal tax situation without creating separate analyses.
Add or Change a State Scenario
Each scenario supports one active state tax calculation.
If a scenario does not already have a state selected:
- Open Scenario Analysis
- Scroll to the State Tax Modeling section
- Click Add State Scenario

- Select the desired state from the drop-down list

If working from a copied scenario that already has a state selected, simply choose a different state from the State drop-down. The state tax calculation is updated automatically for that scenario.
Once a state is added, that state's tax section automatically expands to display all applicable inputs and calculated values, allowing for immediate review or editing of the state tax calculation.
Compare Multiple States
Each scenario can have its own active state tax calculation, allowing users to compare different state tax outcomes side by side while using the same federal tax information.
For example:
- Scenario 1 – California
- Scenario 2 – Arizona
Because each scenario is calculated independently, users can quickly compare how different state tax laws affect the client's overall tax liability.

Only states with state tax liability will populate in this list.
Working with State Tax Sections
Each state's details appear in a collapsible section beneath the State Tax Modeling header to focus on the states being actively reviewed, while minimizing others.
When a state is added or a new state is selected, its section automatically opens in an expanded view. Collapse it at any time using the – icon

Expand it again later by clicking the + icon

When expanded, the active state displays all applicable inputs, including:
- State Filing Status
- State additions and subtractions
- State-specific deductions
- Credits and exemptions
- Calculated state tax results
Because each state has its own tax laws, the fields displayed vary depending on the selected state. Any changes made are reflected immediately in the calculated results.
If a state is selected in another scenario, its section remains visible across all scenarios to allow comparison of the same state's inputs and results side by side. In scenarios where that state is not active, the section appears blank and does not affect calculations. Only the active state contributes to that scenario's tax calculation.
Remove a State
To remove a state from a scenario:
- Click Remove State Scenario within the scenario.
- The selected state is removed only from that scenario.
Removing a state does not affect any other scenarios.
Compare State Tax Results
The State Tax Withholding Calculator at the bottom of the page displays the Total State Tax for each scenario side by side, making it easy to compare the overall tax impact across states at a glance.

If there are income, deduction, or credit items that are applicable to one state but not another, make the additive or subtractive adjustments to those income, deduction, or credit entries to effectively "split" income across various states in the analysis.
