How To Reset A User's Password or MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) Token

Sometimes resetting a user's password is the best way to reestablish a user's access. The user should be able to use the "Forgot Password" feature, but if you're up to resetting it for them, you can absolutely do so.

MFA tokens can be finicky. If a user gets a new phone, there's a good chance they'll need their token reset. For security purposes, non-Firm Admin users do not have the ability to reset MFA tokens.

To Reset a Password:

Navigate to Settings > User Admin as seen below.

User Admin

Here, you'll see a list of the users under your Holistiplan account. You can manage one user at a time by clicking the three dots circled below and selecting the "Resend Invite" option. In the example below you will see a "Send Invite" link in the "Last Login" column, which indicates this user has not yet signed into their Holistiplan account.

If you want to manage multiple users at one time you'll want to check the box next to the users you're resetting the password for, and then select the "Resend Invite" option from the "Select Option to Apply" dropdown box that will appear above the username column.

WARNING: Do not click on the box directly below the Send Email Invites box, or you'll reset everyone at your firm's password!

To Reset a Token:

Do the same steps as above, but this time click on the "Reset MFA Token" option. When you visit your Holistiplan login screen, you will see a the following MFA setup screen below to utilize a QR code that will activate your MFA token.

To Use Your QR Code as Your MFA:

Holistiplan suggests using either Google Authenticator or Twilio Authy. Steps to set up each are below. We aren't aware of any MFA programs or apps that don't work with Holistiplan, so if your firm has a specific app, feel free to use that!

  1. On your phone, download the Google Authenticator app via the app store. The Authy app is also supported.  If you already have this app installed, move to Step 2.
  2. From within the authenticator app you choose, click "+" to add a new item. You likely will be prompted to "Scan a QR Code" or "Enter a setup key." Both methods will work, but QR code will be faster.
  3. While still within the authenticator app, aim your phone at the QR code on your Holistiplan login screen.
  4. Enter the 6 or 7 digit number supplied by your app into the field on the Holistiplan login screen and click "submit." This step will synch your phone to our servers. When logging in from now on, you will be prompted to enter a code from the authentication app.
  5. Note that you should NOT scan this QR code outside of that authentication app. All of this only works if you install the app, click within the app to add a new site, then scan the QR code from within the app.
