Creating a Tax Letter
Our Tax Preparation Letter is a great resource for advisors wanting to give clients (and their tax preparers) the most accurate information about what happened in the last year.
To add a tax letter, users on a Premium plan can navigate to the Tax Letters tab of their client's household screen and click Create Tax Letter:
Select the tax year for which this letter is referring to:
NOTE: This year represents the tax year for which the letter is being created, not the year in which the Tax Letter is drafted. 2026 Tax Letters will typically correlate with the 2026 Tax Return.

The new Tax Letter will now show up in the Tax Letters section of the household. Click on it to edit!
Preview the Tax Letter as it's being worked on! This split screen will house the edit options on the left and show an updated preview of the Letter on the right. Scroll down on the left side to view additional edit options. 
Edit Panel:
- Tax Letter Status is used to track the progress of this client's specific tax letter. Track the progress of all Tax Letters for a firm on the Tax Letter Staging screen.
- Reorder Sections allows customization of the order each section appears in on the tax letter.
- + Add Another Line can be used to add another item to an existing section already created within the tax letter.

- Edit Section Types allows Firm Admins to create and update custom additional sections that can be used on all households firmwide.

- Copy from Last Year will bring all tax documents from the prior year forward.

- Copy Sections from 2025 - If a Tax Letter has been created for the previous tax year, copy the line items and/or sections from the prior year's Tax Letter.
Copy Sections button will not appear if the sections from the prior year are empty
Sections:
Within a section, Holistiplan will automatically total the amounts noted on each row. Uncheck the Show Total on Letter box to remove the totals from that section.

Preview Panel:
- Enlarge Font using the toggle button to increase the text size on the tax letter.
- View CPA/EA Version is a toggle to switch back and forth between the client version of the letter and the version for the tax preparer.
- View/Print Letter is a dropdown bar that can be used to either preview, print, or print and set the status of the letter to complete.
- Tax Letter Staging can be used to access the Tax Letter Staging screen, which lists the status of Tax Letters across all clients.
- Logo and Disclaimer Language are set on a firm or subsidiary level and can be customized following the steps in our article here.
