My Upload Was Unsuccessful. What Now?

Sometimes a return is submitted and Holistiplan can't process the return as uploaded. We'll explain your next steps as well as why this might happen.

You may get one of the following messages when we need more information. We directly email the user who uploaded the return to provide those details as well. If you are not the one who uploaded the return, you may consider contacting the person who did for more information. That said, the Holistiplan support team can always clarify what was in the email!

Critical Data Missing

  • In addition to the actual 1040, there are almost always other necessary forms/schedules that need to be included with your uploaded return. If/when those are missing, we will highlight those additional documents that need to be included with the 1040 in one combined PDF and reuploaded to have that return processed successfully. Our system does not combine separate uploads into one - all necessary documents must be included in the same upload.
For reference, we have attached a guide below that details what forms we need per the requirements of each return. Reviewing this guide and offering it to clients should allow you to bypass manual review to efficiently generate an accurate Tax Report.

Awaiting A Response

  • When there is a discrepancy between Holistiplan's internal calculation and what is reported on the return, we will reach out with more information to the uploader of the return with those questions and next steps. Reply to that email or contact our Support Team for assistance.
  • Returns that have critical data missing or are awaiting a response will count against your upload total, since our OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software was unable to clear the return and a manual review by our team was required.

Returns that fail due to one of the reasons below will not count against your upload total, since the manual review was limited due technical difficulties, a return type,w or calculation being unsupported. Within each section, we have linked some troubleshooting steps to help!

File Size

Returns must be under 20MB to be accepted. If your file is too large, please refer to our tips below to reduce the file size of your uploaded return. If those steps don't work, you can delete unnecessary pages and refer to our article on what forms are necessary.

What Forms Do I Need to Upload?

Document Type

Holistiplan reads in PDFs of the Federal Form 1040 (and 1040-SR) returns and their supporting forms and schedules. Other return types, like state, business, and trust returns are not supported. Our state tax add-on is a manual entry portion of the Scenario Analysis screen!

Corrupted Document / Unable to Upload

Sometimes files can get jumbled when moving from place to place and this causes an issue with the PDF that makes it unreadable.

Often reprinting (or resaving) the file as a new PDF removes the corrupt aspects of the file. If you are able to open the file, try selecting the 'Print' option and in the drop down select "Save as a PDF." You may also try to print out a physical copy of the return and rescan the pages to create a new file. See our detailed guide below.

Why did my upload fail?

Password Protected

To read PDFs that have password protection, that password must be provided as part of the upload process. Learn more below about uploading those password-protected returns successfully.

Unsupported Calculation

There are a limited number of calculations that are not supported within Holistiplan. Most of these revolve around non-standard calculations of the tax on line 16 of Form 1040. We make note of the frequency of these unsupported calculations, and adjust our development roadmap accordingly to try and provide support for these now unsupported calculations at some point in the future.

Note: Removing the unsupported forms below does not make the return supported, as the tax calculation used on the return still utilizes these unsupported forms, regardless of whether they are included in the uploaded return or not.

Some examples include:

  • Taxpayers claimed as Dependent (Form 8814)
  • Social Security Lump Sum Election
  • Income Averaging for Farmers and Fishermen (Schedule J)
  • Partner’s Additional Reporting Year Tax (Form 8978)
  • Information Return of U.S. Persons for Certain Foreign Corporations (Form 5471)
  • Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return (Form 1040-NR)
  • Amended Individual Income Tax Return (Form 1040-X)
    • When Taxpayers amend their returns, they receive a Form 1040-X (a summary of what was amended) and a new federal Form 1040 with the new values. We require the amended Form 1040 in order to provide an accurate Tax Report.
